The 2nd Annual LakeArts Film Festival at Chautauqua Institution in Western New York State in partnership with the Tribeca Film Festival Presents
“The Best of New York’s Tribeca Film Festival”


The Festival opened with Tribeca Film Festival’s The Bang Bang Club.

The Bang-Bang Club tells the story of four young photojournalists and the extremes they went to in order to capture their pictures in the days prior to the downfall of apartheid in South Africa. The film takes place between 1990 and 1994 — the period between Nelson Mandela's release from prison and the 1994 elections.

This 2010 Canadian-South African co-production was written and directed by Steven Silver


“A family film event on featured the award-winning Snowmen, the story of a group of small-town boys on a winter quest to set a Guinness World Record. Through a comedic series of stunts that eventually threaten their very lives, the boys conquer schoolyard bullies, unite their community, and discover that while fame may be fleeting, true friendship lasts forever. 14-year old Star Christian Martyn introduced the film.  Written and Directed by Robert Kirbyson”.

Student Filmmakers Special Screening showcased the Arts council of Chautauqua’s 3rd Street Canvas Project and SUNY’s “Causes Film Festival”.



On the closing day, David Zinman, the founder of Chautauqua’s popular Classic Movie series paid tribute to the career of New York filmmaker, Sidney Lumet with a special presentation of Lumet’s award-winning film, 12 Angry Men.

Featuring Tribeca Flashpoint Media Arts Academy
Workshops in Creating Music for Stage, Screen & New Media

Internationally-recognized film composer Miguel Kertsman of Tribeca’s Flashpoint Media Arts Academy presented a 2-part workshop, Creating Music for Stage, Screen and New Media with a Lecture/Demonstration on the first day, followed by a Workshop on day two.

CREATING MUSIC FOR STAGE, SCREEN, AND MEDIA
A Two-Part Workshop:

Part I featured a lecture/ demonstration with international composer Miguel Kertsman of Tribeca Flashpoint Media Arts Academy. Using video and film clips, musical instruments, and sound equipment, Miguel will present a survey of music for the Concert Stage, Feature Film and Television and New Media. Sound branding, live to film scoring, cell phone and computer games were highlighted.


Part II featured an interactive workshop using keyboard instruments, percussion and synthesizers, Miguel Kertsman worked with students to create a collaborative film score for a multi-media work.

Miguel Kertsman’s multi-continental career as composer, musician, recording artist, producer, and audio engineer has produced numerous recording projects, including Grammy-nominated, critically acclaimed, and Award-winning releases across various music genres with labels such as Sony, EMI, RCA / BMG, Warner, and others. Miguel has consulted on Music Technology and Curriculum Integration for Berklee College of Music, Yale University School of Music, and The Academy at Carnegie Hall.

Holds Intensive Two-Day Photography Workshop

Exploring the Art of Documentary Photography 

at Chautauqua, New York

The first-day’s presentation of the documentary photography workshop focused on important techniques and skills designed to help participants better understand documentary photography followed by an afternoon of photographing the Chautauqua Lake area. Participants were encouraged to explore the Chautauqua community while identifying and documenting individuals (or groups) that reflect the future of the community. Later in the afternoon Martha Rial was available for one-on-one critiques of the day’s work.  


On the second day, Rial held a group critique and discussion of participants’ work in the morning, followed by additional shooting in the field. The workshop concluded in the evening with another group critique and presentation. 


A selection of the work produced in this workshop were featured in local businesses and LakeArts’ online gallery

Martha Rial

Martha Rial is a Pittsburgh-based independent photographer who specializes in documentary, editorial, travel and portrait photography.  Martha's photographs documenting the lives of Burundian and Rwandan refugees won the 1998 Pulitzer Prize for Spot News Photography.


Martha previously worked as a staff photographer for The St. Petersburg Times, and her hometown newspaper, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.


She is a faculty member of the Pittsburgh Filmmakers.


She has won the Scripps Howard Foundation Award for Photojournalism, a National Headliner Award, and has been named Pennsylvania News Photographer of the Year.
